Tips on using aluminum foil

Improvise a skillet
If you don't want to carry a frying pan with you on your next camping trip, you can form your own by centering a skewer on two layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Wrap the edges of the foil tightly around the forked branches while leaving some slack in the foil between the forks. Flip the stick over and press down the center to accommodate the food for frying.

Baking Pie Crust
Some of these aluminum foil tips will help you in the kitchen. Cover them with strips of aluminum foil to prevent the edges of homemade pies from burning. The foil prevents the edges from overcooking while the rest of the pie browns completely.

decorate a cake
Convenience without a pastry bag? no problem. Pipe a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil and fill with free-flowing frosting.

Keep rolls and bread warm
Want the fresh warmth of homemade rolls or bread locked in the oven for dinner or a picnic? Before you load your basket, wrap your freshly baked food in a napkin and place a layer of aluminum foil underneath. The foil will reflect heat and keep the bread warm for a while.

Make a BBQ Drip Pan
To prevent meat drippings from dripping off your barbecue coals, create a disposable drip pan out of several layers of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Shape it with your free hands, or use an inverted baking sheet as a mold (remember to remove the baking sheet when your creation is complete). Also, don`t forget to make your drip pan slightly larger than the meat on the grill.

Quick grilling tips using aluminum foil
Step One: Shape Foil into Balls

Nothing complicated here - just roll the foil into a ball.

Step Two: Scrape the Grill

Grab your tongs and use them to hold the foil ball in place so you can scrape down the grill grates. The aluminum foil will remove any remaining residue, leaving you with a clean grate the next time you fire up your grill. It's that simple!

make a funnel
Can't find your funnel? Fold a length of heavy-duty aluminum foil over and roll it into a cone shape. This temporary funnel has an advantage over a permanent funnel-you can bend the foil to reach awkward holes, like the oil filler hole plugged into a lawn tractor engine.

Create a sun box for your plants
A sunny window is a great place for plants that like lots of light. However, since light always comes from the same direction, plants tend to bend toward it. To bathe your plants from all sides, make a sun box: remove the top and one side from the cardboard box and line the other three sides and bottom with aluminum foil, shiny side facing out, secure it with tape in place. Place the plant in a box near a window.

Set up a seed incubator
To get plants grown from seed off to a healthy start, line a shoe box with aluminum foil, shiny side up, allowing about two inches of foil to extend to the sides. Poke a few drainage holes in the bottom - through the foil - then fill the box more than halfway with potting soil and plant the seeds. The foil on the inside of the box will absorb heat to keep the seeds warm while they germinate, while the foil on the outside of the box will reflect light onto the sprouts. Place the box near a sunny window, keep the soil moist, and watch them grow!
