Product Description

There's a good chance you've found copper pipes somewhere in your home, such as around your hot water tank or under your sink. Copper is the metal of choice for drinking water systems for many reasons, not the least of which is that it is non-toxic and safe to drink. Due to copper's high electrical conductivity, high thermal conductivity, corrosion/fire resistance and durability, this naturally occurring metallic element is also the preferred choice for a variety of application types.

The process of joining copper pipe and copper fittings is called soldering (or sweating) and is a critical step in the copper pipe installation process. Solder is a metal or metal alloy that historically consisted of varying proportions of lead (called lead-based solder) and tin. Today, due to the Safe Drinking Water Act and lead-free restrictions, solder containing more than 0.2% lead may not be used in potable water systems.

Solder that is safe for use in drinking water systems contains a percentage of tin and other non-toxic metals. Solder has a lower melting point than copper and will melt when heated and fuse pipes together when completely cooled.
