Copper cable consists of two or more copper wires run side by side and bonded, stranded or braided together to form a single assembly. The cable can be made more pliable by twisting the wires together.
The copper wires in a cable may be bare or plated with a thin layer of another metal (most commonly tin, but sometimes gold or silver) to minimize oxidation. Plating extends wire life and makes soldering easier. Twisted-pair and coaxial cables are designed to suppress electromagnetic interference, prevent signal radiation, and provide a transmission line with specified characteristics. Shielded cables are wrapped in foil or wire mesh.
