Standards are published by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) International, one of the oldest international standards organisations in the world ASTM International predates other similar organisations, including ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission).

Steel plate is carbon and Low Alloy Steel Plate used in the manufacture of pressure vessel bodies. It includes carbon steels, carbon-manganese steels, microalloyed steels, low-alloy high-strength steels and cryogenic steels. Their operating temperatures usually range from -20°C to 500°C and sometimes up to 560°C. The main term for this is 16MnR. This refers primarily to 16MnR steel (low alloy steel 16 MnR, steel grade), which is used in the production of ASME Code pressure vessels.
